| Help For using Random Route |
I don't know what level of experience you have had with route building so I will assume you know nothing and I apologize if I am explaining stuff you already know.
You have all the files in a folder called "RandomRoute" right? This should be in your ROUTES folder with all your other routes. The next thing I have to ask is do you have all the default MSTS routes currently installed? All of the files aren't used but they are referenced in case people want to make their own "tiles." After you have completed the install you can delete the routes you don't wish to have.
In the randomroute folder there is a program called INSTALL BAT. You will want to click on that and it will run a batch file that will do the dirty work of copying all the files needed from the other routes. It takes a couple of minutes and it will stop on occasion but let it do its thing. The box should say finished when done.
You are ready to go as far as the RandomRoute install is concerned but you haven't made a route yet. Nothing will work if you try to load the route in train simulator at this point. The program has two programs for making routes. The first is RandomRoute.exe which randomly generates a new route. You can change the number codes to whatever you wish, but tile #1 in the lower right corner and the codes above it (91-99) shouldn't be changed either if you want to use the default activities that come with the program.
When you are ready, click on the "Make Random Route Batch File" button. When you do this, two things happen. A file called newroute.rte is generated and a newroute.bat file is created. At this point nothing has changed on your computer. The newroute.rte is a data file that stores your route for future editing. You can rename this file to something else if you wish to create a library of your favorite routes. You will have to rename it back to newroute.rte if you wish to edit it later on. The program that will make the changes to your randomroute folder(change of route and scenery) is the newroute.bat file. Like the Install.bat program it is a DOS based program that changes the tiles around in the 20x10 grid. After you run this program your route has changed to match your configuration you set up in the RandomRoute.exe program.
At this point, Train Simulator needs to rebuild the database and compile the route into something it understands. You will need to go into the MSTS Editors and Tools Program (should be an icon in your train simulator program menu) From the Editors & Tools page, select Route Editor. You should see a picture of railroad tracks with a pop up window saying "Select a Route" chances are the route in the box is not "RandomRoute" you will need to change it to this to "RandomRoute". If you don't find RandomRoute listed, you have messed up your install and have the route in the wrong folder.
From here you need to click on the ADVANCED tab first. The only option that pops up on mine is "Rebuild Track database" Yes, that's what we're here for so you want to check that box. When you are ready to go, click OK and get ready for the ride. The program should "fly around" your whole map and build the route. Depending on how elaborate your route is, it may take a little while. The very first time you run this, it will take extra long because it has to build lighting and shading files (buffers) first. It won't do this in the future. If everything went well, you will get a pop up window saying all tiles visited. Click OK. Click on the Route pulldown and "Save" the route. Clicking again on the Route Pulldown and then exit will get you out of the program. You are now ready to play after you exit the EDITOR AND TOOLS PROGRAM.
Start Train Simulator like you normally would and enjoy RandomRoute!
If you find that the route needs changing, you will run the second .exe program called EDITROUTE.EXE. This program works similar to the RandomRoute.exe program and loads the file newroute.rte from the randomroute directory. It will automatically replace the newroute.bat and make a newroute.rte file when you click on the "Make Random Route Batch File" button. Any time you run the NewRoute.bat file to make your update your route, you have to do a database rebuild as described above.
Remember you can change the default activity by running the NewActivity.exe program and change just the consists by Running the GP38CONS.exe program. This will change both the train you drive and trains you meet going North on the route.
I hope this has been a help and you enjoy the program.
Let me know if you have suggestions for future releases.
